[W]e tend to view technology, as a panacea that will be able to outpace biophysical reality, human greed and all of the most unsavoury aspects of human behaviour. This hypothesis, however, remains largely untested. Despite our ostensible emphasis on empirical analysis, there is a general failure to measure effectively. For instance, we have yet to systematically assess the long-term effects of World Bank “development” projects on quality of life and environmental health, the realistic potential of prisons to rehabilitate criminals, or the relationship between continued technological growth and human emancipation. The highest form of the betrayal of reason is our continue profligate destruction of the planet for uncertain human benefit, while the data on ecocultural ruination continue to mount.
